NIMBUS Michigan was founded in Grand Rapids as NIMBUS C.C., a leather club for men, in February of 1977. The name of the Club was later changed to NIMBUS GR to reflect the club's location. Subsequent changes to accommodate a broader community were: NIMBUS Grand Rapids, NIMBUS West Michigan and finally NIMBUS Michigan. The Club's foundations were based on those of two existing leather clubs. Tribe of Detroit, MI and Spearhead of Toronto, Ontario. The Name NIMBUS was chosen actually referring to a Nimbus, the symbol often pictured behind ancient Greek deities. The three Greek letters, Omega, Omicron and Nu, when used in this form translate most directly to, "Out of Chaos, Comes Order." This phrase inspired the Charter Members to form the basic ideology of NIMBUS, that of "Strength Through Brotherhood." NIMBUS Michigan operates under the guidance of bylaws which govern our structure, our meetings, and events. The bylaws provide for officers of the club, these are: Captain; Co-Captain; Road Captain; Secretary; Treasurer; and Historian. There are four classifications of membership in NIMBUS Michigan: Full Member - Nimbus Michigan will maintain an "Active Associates List". All associates are responsible for maintaining their "active" status with Nimbus. An associate may keep his status "active" by simply supplying Nimbus with a current mailing or e-mail address. Associate Membership is obtained by application only. GDI's (independents - not members of a club, but of the Leather Community at large) may only become Associate Members when residing outside of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Area. |
